Sherri has the ultimate voice for the kind of jazz she’s doing on this fine release of a dozen songs… a high-talent background in both theater and song-stage performance gives her an edge over most other jazz vocalists I’ve heard lately… just listen to the laid-back atmosphere she creates on “Joy Spring“… with energetic contributions from Harvie S on bass, piano from David Udolf, drums from Akira Tana and guitar by Sheryl Bailey – this is the best jazz vocal set I’ve listened to (yet) in 2017! The recording engineers deserve credit as well, because this is truly a stellar recording, with every note and every shading captured masterfully… if you want to verify what I’m saying, just listen to “One Morning In May“… Sherri’s voice meshes seamlessly with the players on this track, to be sure… even though I’m not a big fan of “romantic” jazz, this album is the exception. As impressive as the two tunes noted above were, it is the delightfully airy “Spring Sprang Sprung” that got my vote for personal favorite of the twelve songs offered up… what Sherri and her players project more than anything else is that NOTHING is worth rushing into… which, as veteran jazz listeners know, IS the ultimate in cool! I give Sherri and her cast of players a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, with an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of 4.98. Rotcod Zzaj |
