Sherri Roberts is a singer with a mature voice, good diction and knows how to get inside a tune. Add to that an accompanist who does his job so well and then solos beautifully. That makes this CD a very special experience. There are no gimmicks here, no frills. It is just plain pure music which I find refreshing in this day and age.
The song collection is mostly from Tin Pan Alley but not the workhorses. Add a Dave Frishberg tune, “Our Love Rolls On,” and one from Henry Mancini - “Moon River” - and it gives this disc an unusual balance of musical sounds.
Ms. Roberts is a native of South Carolina, grew up in Georgia, received her under-grad education in Ohio and lives on the West Coast for the past several decades. This recording is only her fourth and one wonders why she has not been recorded more often. She has been singing professionally for a long time.
Bliss Rodriguez hasn’t been much better off as a recording artist. He also has been around for some years. His talent, like hers, is top drawer. Who knows? All I can say is that this is a very good CD and one well worth having in your collection.
