On Twilight
World, vocalist Sherri Roberts has made superb choices not only
in selecting her repertoire but also in hiring a group of stellar
musicians who do justice to her selections.
The
album, arranged by Harvie Swartz with an assist from Mark Soskin,
covers a great deal of musical ground, from underplayed gems like
Vernon Duke's "Roundabout," which features a lyric by Ogden Nash,
to Bill Evans's instrumentally challenging "Very Early," with lyrics
by Carol Hall.
Bass
clarinetist Hockman and celloist Hoffman combine to create an unusual
but effective version of the ballad "Emily." On Jobim's "Happy Madness,"
vocalist Roberts leads the group with a beautifully articulate voice
that instrumentally falls somewhere between Chet Baker and Stan
Getz. The album ends on a high note with Roberts overtracking her
voice to build a chorus that soars over pianist Mark Soskin's arpeggio
on Brubeck's "Summer Song."
