Roberts is a very talented young American singer, and here she get
superb backing from Mark Soskin (piano), Harvie Swartz (bass) and
Jeff Hamilton (drums). There is great musical intelligence in the
choice of songs and interpretation. Ms. Roberts singing is deliberate,
behind the beat yet intensely swinging, with a full, rich delivery
reminiscent of Helen Merrill. Highlights include "Twilight World",
"Emily" and "I Remember You", all with lyrics by Johnny Mercer - the
last, great, song is composer Victor Schertzinger's finest hour (maybe
his only hour). An outstanding debut album, unusual and distinctive.
